Banda Arc
Famous for its 180° curvature & is, in Timor, generally agreed to be the product of collision between a volcanic arc & the Australian continental margin.The Banda Sea is a marine ecoregion, as defined by the World Wildlife Fund. It is defined as within the Central Indo-Pacific region, which due in part to its central location at the meeting of two oceans, has the greatest richness & diversity of marine organisms, specifically located within the Coral Triangle, which contains 76% of all known coral species in the world. The Banda Sea is part of the Coral Triangle region. Various cetacean species have been recorded including either or both blue & pygmy blue whales & omura’s whales (Balaenoptera omurai). Diving with a shiver of scalloped hammerhead sharks is top of the bill for most visitors to the Banda Sea.
The Forgotten Islands
The Forgotten Islands refer to the long chain of islands & atolls, part of southern Maluku, & extending for over 600 km from Wetar to Yamdena, following the Inner & Outer volcanic Arc of Sunda. We will follow the Forgotten Islands on the Inner Arc of Sunda. Remote & sparsely populated, the Forgotten Islands have remained largely isolated from the rest of Indonesia & the world – hence ‘Forgotten’.The Forgotten Islands have some of the best diving in Indonesia. The dive sites are characterized by pristine reefs & dramatic walls populated with hard & soft corals, sea fans & enormous sponges teeming with marine life.
